Health Benefits of Slow Feeding

Slow feeding helps horses and ponies spend more time doing what comes naturally: eating hay in smaller amounts over a longer period.

More time eating hay

Horses are grazing animals, adapted to eating small, frequent meals throughout the day. A slow-feed hay net reduces the rate of intake, helping a hay meal last longer and giving your horse more time to eat. That can mean less time standing without feed and less opportunity for boredom-related behaviour.

A practical tool for controlled diets

For horses on a carefully managed hay ration, including some horses affected by laminitis (founder), obesity or insulin dysregulation, a slow feeder can make the measured amount last longer without increasing the ration. The amount and type of hay should always follow the plan recommended by your veterinarian or equine nutritionist.

A steadier response after eating

In a small study of overweight adult horses on the same restricted ration, horses using slow-feed nets took longer to eat and had lower peak insulin and cortisol levels than horses eating from the floor. Both groups lost weight, but the nets did not cause extra weight loss. This suggests that slower eating may support a more even response after a meal, but a hay net is not a treatment for insulin dysregulation or obesity.

Supporting digestive management

Long gaps without hay can be a concern for digestive health. Extending eating time may form one useful part of a broader management plan for horses at risk of gastric ulcers, alongside appropriate hay, turnout, exercise and veterinary care. More regular access to hay encourages chewing and saliva production, which helps buffer stomach acid. A slow feeder does not diagnose, prevent or treat ulcers on its own.

Fewer long gaps for the gut

Spreading hay intake over more hours keeps food moving through the digestive system and avoids replacing a natural eating pattern with one or two short meals. Longer eating time has been associated with a lower incidence of colic, but no feeding device can prevent colic. Reliable water, good-quality hay, gradual diet changes, movement and prompt veterinary attention remain essential.

Longer chewing time

A 2024 study found that small-mesh hay nets increased the time horses spent chewing each kilogram of hay, although they did not increase the total number of chews. Extending the chewing period may spread saliva production over more of the day and support normal digestion. The effect varies with the hay, mesh size and the individual horse.

Slower, smaller bites

Restricting access to the hay encourages smaller mouthfuls and a steadier eating pace. This may be helpful for some horses that rush their feed or have a history of choke (oesophageal obstruction), but any horse that has choked should be assessed by a veterinarian before its feeding routine is changed.

Less idle time and fewer unwanted behaviours

More time eating can reduce long periods of inactivity in a stable or yard. Research has linked slower hay feeding with reductions in behaviours such as cribbing, weaving and pacing. The hole size should not be so restrictive that it causes frustration, pawing or repeated pulling at the net.

Keeping hay clear of sandy ground

Using a hay net above a clean rubber mat or within a suitable feeder keeps more hay away from sandy or dirty ground. This can reduce opportunities to ingest sand while eating and may also help limit hay waste. Always hang and secure the net safely for your individual horse.

Every horse is different

Slow-feed nets are a management aid, not a substitute for veterinary care. Ask your veterinarian or equine nutritionist about the right hay, ration, hole size and feeding setup for your horse, particularly if they have a diagnosed medical condition or difficulty chewing or swallowing.

Position also matters. A net hung too high can encourage an unnatural neck posture. Hay nets can also increase exposure to hay dust. Secure the net so a hoof cannot become caught, keep it as close to a natural eating height as is safe, and check it regularly for damage. Horses with asthma or another respiratory condition may need soaked or low-dust hay and an individual feeding plan from their veterinarian.
